Sheep-To-Shawl Celebration Philipsburg Manor, Sleepy Hollow New York

Historic Hudson Valley is where I call home. For the past 32 years I have gone to Philipsburg Manor in Sleepy Hollow, New York for events that brings families together to step back in time and to enjoy the simpler times in our history. Throughout the year they offer wonderful events for families to participate in and today was one of my favorites.
In a bucolic setting a half hour away from home I went to visit todays Sheep-To-Shawl celebration. This event brought many onto the grounds to watch sheep being sheared, and hands on wool being spun, and dyed and then weaving. The children present are encouraged with their parents to get involved with the guidance of the staff who are dressed in costume appropriate to the period.
I was there to watch Scottish Border Collies heard both ducks and sheep and to learn more about this oldest dog discipline. It isn’t as easy as it looks and takes a tremendous about of work on both the Shepard and the dogs who herd. They work is such a harmonious rhythm that is so beautiful to watch.
The Scottish Border Collies showed such focus and restraint when following the commands of the Gene Sheninger who used both verbal commands and a whistle which guided his Collies to herd both ducks and sheep.
