New York City Tartan Week
It’s been a year since the last Tartan Day Parade so the pleasure of returning was met with high expectations as last year my friend and I had a blast at it. Men in Kilts and Vikings are a wonderful sight to see on the streets of New York.
This year I went with two cameras and two friends to take photographs of the beloved Scottish breeds who were marching in the parade but also to enjoy the atmosphere of this week long celebration. Stepping out of Grand Central we were greeted by school marching bands walking to the parade route and lots of kilted men and women. We knew we had found our way to the parade route when we found two beautiful double decker buses.
As we are putting together a dog magazine so covering this event remains paramount as sharing the rare Dandie Dinmont Terriers, Scottish Terriers in a public setting and West Highland Terriers and Shetland Sheepdogs remains our mission. I’m not sure if the parade organizers are aware of just how endangered both the Dandie Dinmont or the Scottish Terriers are but hope next year they might bring the dogs to the top of the parade and have them open it up.
What makes this one of our all time favorite parades in New York City as how jovial the crowds are. Everyone loves the sound of the music, the beautiful women doing highland fling and then when you add dogs to the mix, the crowds seem to swarm. It’s the perfect event for anyone who wants to immerse themselves into some great Scottish music. We were at the end of the parade route where many people mingled and talk with the dog owners about these treasured dogs.
Later that night while going thru 1400 images I found some of the most timeless photographs I’ve taken in over a year. The tender timelessness of all these images came from arriving families whose Scottish breeds made it intoxicating as a photographer. Joyfully all these dogs greeted each other while swaths of color from the tartan seemed to dance around each of them while the bagpipes played.
I couldn’t ask for a more conducive setting to create art than what I found on Saturday.
As far as these photographs, no photoshop has been used and the only altering was cropping. Straight single image shooting one shot at a time was done while using multiple Sony Alphas cameras. This is a very small portion of what I did – all the images will be on the Dog Show Photography of Margaret Foxmoore later today. On a one a four paw rating to go or not go – we give it four paws.

Thank you to the NYPD for doing yet another great job at keeping us all save.
