New York State Police and K-9 Theo at Grand Central Station

Walking through Grand Central Station after missing my train, I found myself looking upwards towards the ceiling and thinking out loud “A DOG” what would make this day perfect was finding one dog to photograph. Instantly I realized my camera was sitting on a table at home and all I had was a cell phone to take any photographs with. Low and behold before my eyes, lit in this warm magical light that only Grand Central has, was one lone dog, and not just any dog, but a K-9 with his New York State Trooper partner.

Call it perfect timing, planets aligning or god answering my prayers- this couldn’t get any better. Dogs fulfilling their purpose while having the person (in this case – partner) that cares for them at their side is perfection. Humbled once more by a K-9 officer I watched as he never took his eyes off the crowd, using his nose, doing his job while keeping us safe in one of the busiest places in New York City.

I introduced myself and asked if it was alright to take a photograph of his K-9 (still finding myself quite bothered by not having my camera with me) and Trooper Summers gracious said I may while introducing me to his partner, K-9 Theo. All State Troopers I have met and continue to meet have always been so courteous, respectful and approachable. Understanding their job and never wanting to distract them from doing that- this needed to be a quick photograph. Trooper Summers and K-9 Theo allowed me to photograph them and when turning around to leave I saw more troopers gathered and asked if it was possible to photograph them all together.

Suddenly a few simple images turned into a New York moment with these beautiful Troopers flanking Trooper Summers and K-9 Theo like a model shoot. In a flash the images were taken and I turned around to leave for the second time in five minutes, but this time found a crowd of visitors gathered behind me doing exactly what I had been doing. Everyone involved in this impromptu photoshoot in Grand Central had been enjoying every minute of it like myself. I can only imagine what the Troopers must of been thinking while they were getting photographed. With that I headed off to catch my train north knowing these New York moments happen so quickly.

My day which started out in surgeons office now ended with a group of Troopers, one beautiful K-9 partner and a crowd who respectfully were photographing those that serve.

I sure do love New York.

Thank you to the New York State Police
