What’s More Perfect in February in New York City? Nothing! WKCDS

This year I set lofty expectations for what I wanted to get done for both the online and published magazines. After a quiet start and finding myself on medical leave I’ve had time to plan ahead for the next 10 months and get extra work done.

Unsure whether I was going to be able to go I knew the need to have photographers to capture pictures of the show for the magazine. The criteria for photographers was they all needed to have an art background and who would be as excited about dogs as I am. I sent out prayer and somewhere out in the universe my prayers were answered as god had directed these four artist/photographers into my path. There was no other way to explain how I would have found them. This year the Westminster Kennel Club was photographed by many photographers- four I can proudly say have come on board to be part of the continuing project of Dogs Outside The Ring, which made this years show even more exciting as it wasn’t just me doing this alone. Being present in an online and published magazine DOTR’s mission statement is based on a certain vision we are following. I applied for the passes for our photographers and when the email came with acceptance we were thankful and happy to be on our way to the finest dog show in the county. How the show is watched and covered has changed as everyone has a cell phone that takes pictures which brings the world of dogs instantly to anyone who wants it in a blink of an eye. With our photographers- three who are working artist we knew we would bring a different view on what they saw.

In the world of dogs things do change, the industry is everywhere selling their product but the one thing that has remained dignified is what the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show offers to the public. Mentioning the Westminster Dog Show to any New Yorker during February always brings a warm buzz about the big time dogs coming to town. The public doesn’t seem to mind the weather knowing that going through the doors of the Piers on 54th and West Side Highway they will find some of the worlds most beautiful dogs being groomed in the benching area, or being shown in the rings. Any dog person would find the excitement play out before ones eyes. Our streets are even more exciting to walk when you’re almost always guaranteed to see one of these highly championed dogs walking with their persons early on a cold February morning or early evening.

Two days of beautiful benched shows during the day time followed by two evenings of dog shows at Madison Square Garden.

The historical Westminster Kennel Club was the first club to join the AKC in 1884 and with that this historical dog show has moved forward gracefully above all other shows.
